With Great Power, Comes Great Responsibility

As a heli-skiing operation, it’s fair to say that we wouldn’t get very far without our pilots. Flying in the mountains is no easy task either—it takes years of experience and thousands of practice hours. So, while flying our guests around spectacular mountain ranges seems like (and is) an amazing job, it comes with huge responsibility. Check out our third video and see how our pilots work closely with our guides to deliver exhilarating, and safe, heli ski trips.

We’re All in This Together

At Crescent Spur, safety is one of our foremost priorities. Each morning, we’re up well before any of our guests are awake, prepping for another exhilarating day of heli-skiing in the mountains. The guides and pilot have to consider a wide range of factors to help to ensure a safe and exciting experience.  Of course, our guests also play an important role in safety—take a look at our second video to find out how.

So You Want to Run a Heli-Skiing Operation?

Over the years, quite a few guests have remarked that running a heli-ski operation must be a dream job. Who could argue with them, when you look at the mountain terrain, lodge life, and untouched powder? What some might not realize is what it takes to make it all happen. So, we’ve created a batch of videos to give you a behind-the-scenes perspective. Here’s the first; take a look and let us know what you think!

Dignity is for Losers

It’s hard to tell if this vest had sleeves without looking directly at it.

Most of us have had our share of embarrassing moments on the slopes. Remember those massive headbands and neon onesies? Or when we, as newbies, accidentally plowed into other defenseless beginners? A few of us have even found ourselves being dragged uphill by the T-bar after losing our footing. Ouch!

Normally, we don’t like to remember our past fashions, blunders, and clumsy face-plants. Today, however, we present a unique opportunity for you to turn your less-than-epic memories into something wonderful. So, without further ado, we announce Shame for Gain! Continue reading

Fall 2011 – Winter is in the Air

It was a  short fall season – just enough for most of the flowers to finish blooming at the lodge before the first hard frost finished everything off in early October.  Now the lodge, at 2000 ft elevation, is seeing lots of rain.  But just 200 feet up at highway level, it’s snowing!  The fall leaves were stunning, but they have now fallen and the mountains are white with accumulating snow. It looks like it will be the big winter that forecasters are predicting.

New Guide in Training

We are very pleased to announce the hiring of a new ‘guide in training’.  We can thank lodge manager Jessica and senior guide Adam for this new addition to our staff.  He arrived June 9th weighing in at 7 pounds, 14 ounces and already provides his opinions in a strong, assertive manner.  Fletcher James DeVita is an awesome little brother to 20 month old Cali Lea. Congratulations Jess, Adam and Cali!

Jessica has been an integral part of Crescent Spur for 8 seasons, with the last 6 as our lodge manager. Our guests will be very sad to hear that she will be taking the next year off to do in depth training of this newest staff member.  Her cheerful presence, zany sense of humour and expertise will be sorely missed here at the lodge; however, you will still see her on her frequent visits to Crescent Spur and she will remain in charge of our social media program and special projects.

All the best Jess!  See you back here soon!!  Oh yes, we just had to include one last photo to show you that Adam actually DOES own a tie!

2 + 2 + 2 = Incredible!

What on earth does that mean?  Well, it’s simple – guests tell us that they come to ski with us, and then return again and again for a few simple reasons. Aside from the skiing, the ambience, the competitive pricing, the great lodging and food, it comes down to simple math.

2 Mountain Ranges – our lodge sits in the middle of the Rocky Mountain Trench, a broad valley between two mountain ranges – the famous Rockies and Cariboos.  On any given day, the weather can be completely different in each range, and thus the ski, snow and flying conditions as well.  It is an advantage for the guides to be able to choose the day’s skiing and boarding based on which range will provide the best product.  1500 square miles and over 300 runs divided between two ranges provides lots of choice for only 20 guests!!

Winter of 2011: One Big Dump After Another!

Well, the word has been out for some time now. But we still are hearing from guests who are raving about the winter of 2011. Snow, lots of snow, deep, fluffy, continual. One of the best winters in years. La Niña really came through for us with the guides and staff being just as excited as our guests.

We could go on and on about the winter, but as the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words. So let’s take a look at what the winter of 2011 offered.
